Ever since I can recall, I've used paint. Though I did 'art' at school, I am, for the most part, a self-taught artist. I was
born in 1967 in York, Western Australia and went to school in Papua New
Guinea & Canberra, Australia.
All of my experiences; personal & professional, have become the foundation for expressing my ideas through painting. I am motivated by human rights issues and the 'personal is political'.
In response to my own situation, I often reference domesticity-the detritus, the tensions, and the joys & ironies.
My 'style' generally, is figurative, though I am also particularly fascinated by portraiture and am building my repertoire in this area. I attempt to paint images which capture the intensity of my subject and represent this by applying thick layers using acrylic impastos with heavy, raised brushstrokes and, finally I enhance the layers and textures of the paint to create the final effect.
My images can be unexpected and sometimes uneasy but hopefully there is always something which is revealed.
In May 2011, ABC TV News Presenter and author, Virginia Haussegger, opened the exhibition "Gosia & Green: Body of Work and Play" . I painted her
portrait in 2009 after a group exhibition "The Colour Red" which she also opened.
Here is what Virginia thought about the portrait:
"I love it!"
"I really think you have caught something. I guess it's for others to say just what that is. But I can feel it."
"...I think you have done something quite extraordinary."
Virginia's book, WonderWoman -The myth of 'having it all, is particularly moving and very personal, which I found truly inspirational .
So much has inspired and informed my art over the years and continues to do so. I look back at it now and see its evolution. I wonder where it will go?
